Over the last decades, the fishing effort focused on crustaceans and especially on the lobster has continued to increase. This way, the number of pots used by each boat has grown from a few dozen to several hundred. This process lead to an overexploitation of the seabed and the catches do not go over 400 tonnes/years despite the increase of the means involved. Consequently, it has been necessary to implement a number of new measures to protect the lobster stock, and some restricted areas have been created off the French coasts.

Genetic consequences of production of Pacific oyster larval in hatchery: drift and selective pressures related to rearing practices. In order to study the genetic consequences of production of oyster larvae in hatcheries, two factors were examined: the effects of discarding the smallest larvae (i.e. culling) and temperature effects. A mixed-family approach was used in order to infer the genetic composition of the larval population. The results show that high polymorphic microsatellite-based family assignment is a powerful tool for the study of bivalve larvae genetics. Artificial production from natural spawners could be a way of getting big quantities of spat of Pecten maximus, ln the method described, larval phase (until a size of 250 microns) occurs in a hatchery, post-Iarval phase (from 250 µ until 3 millimeters) in a nursery, and first growth period directly into the sea (from 2 mm to a size of 25-30 mm), The fifst results obtained, production of several thousand of individuals good enough for reseeding, seem to be transposable to a larger scale.

Among the different biological factors which can have an impact on the recruitment of the king scallop, the relationship between the number of produced oocytes and the number of obtained larvae can be tackled from an experimental point of view. In the framework of the repopulation program of the roadsted of Brest (king scallop pluri-annual program), the hatchery spat production trials (Buestel et al., 1982) enabled the monitoring of the variations of the real fertility of Pecten maximus over a year cycle. The natural egg-laying period in the roadsted of Brest spreads from June through to September, but egg-laying can also be triggered artificially all year long. The analysis of the Pecten maximus larval productions carried out between 1982 and 1986 in the framework of the repopulating program of the roadsted of Brest demonstrated the existence of a number of factors affecting larval growth in hatcheries: - Larval growth shows important seasonal fluctuations. It is minimal in February-March (3 to 4 µm.D-1) and maximal in June (6 to 8 µm.D-1). The growth of larvae from conditioned spawners does not differ from that of larvae from mature genitors collected in their natural habitat. La reproduction des mollusques bivalves en écloserie ArchiMer
Devauchelle, Nicole.
Optimal gametogenesis and egg-laying environment, fertility, number of egg-layings, reproductor ageing, relationship between parent characteristics and conditioning and farming success, are the main issues considered by bivalve hatcheries each time the reproduction of a species is taken care of. Even if there is still very little bibliographic data on this precise field, reproduction mechanisms have been studied for decades in Mytilidae and Ostreidae. Largely cultivated in open sea, they are indeed an experimental material of choice. In this paper, we will see how the acquired knowledge and the methods developed on this material can be used to carry out a study on bivalve reproduction in hatcheries.

Review of the reproductive physiology of the scallop, Pecten maximus, applicable to intensive aquaculture ArchiMer

This paper presents a summary of information on reproduction biology in the scallop, Pecten maximus, which is required for the successful reseeding and intensive aquaculture programs developed in France since 1982. Data are presented on the following subjects: environmental factors that sustain gametogenic activity and the time of year this activity occurs; biochemical changes that are associated with gametogenesis; the consistency of egg quality; and development of a simple test to predict egg quality.

Aquaculture of penaeid shrimps holds a major place in productions of animals. New Caledonia takes part to these productions by developing the breeding of Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Nowadays, penaeid larviculture can’t be undertaken unless antibiotics are used. Experiments in the Caledonian Aquacultural Laboratory (LAC IFREMER Saint-Vincent) put across to the development of two antibiotic prophylaxis plans for substitution of erythromycine, one plan with oxytetracycline (hydrochloride), the other plan with trimethoprime-sulfadiazine association. After an antimicrobial agent susceptibility testing of bacteria and an acute toxicity study, efficacity assays are the biological validation of these projects of protocols

The reproduction effort in Crassostrea gigas, as in most bivalve molluscs, has priority over their somatic growth. At the beginning of spring, the energetic metabolic processes are geared towards gametogenesis over glucidic stocks, thus inducing a slowing down of the growth and a change in the organoleptic qualities of the flesh (Héral & Deslous-Paoli, 1983). The same authors showed that this effort increases along with age (figure 1). In young one-year-old oysters, the energy is mostly burnt in growth, only 18 % is involved in reproduction, whereas in two-year-old oysters, 60 to 65 % of the energy is used for gamete formation (Deslous-Paoli & Héral, 1983). La mission effectuée du 13 mai au 7 juin 90 à l'écloserie de la ferme Sodacal en Nouvelle-Calédonie avait pour but de tester les aqua-plakR pour les comptages bactériens en routine dans une écloserie industrielle. La technique classique (comptage sur boite de Pétri) est en effet très peu utilisée par les éleveurs du fait de sa lourdeur alors qu'une bonne connaissance de l'évolution de la flore bactérienne dans les bacs d'élevages peut s'avérer nécessaire pour assurer une gestion sanitaire correcte de ces élevages. D'autre part, une collection la plus large possible des différentes souches bactériennes rencontrées a été réalisée. La mission effectuée de mi-janvier à mi-février à l'écloserie CAMCAR (Colombie), avait pour objectif l'analyse quantitative et qualitative de la flore bactérienne présente en élevage larvaire de crevettes pénéides. L'intérêt principal du choix de ce site est de travailler dans une écloserie jeune (- de de deux ans) et n'ayant jamais rencontré de problème pathologique. Cette analyse fait donc le point sur les équilibres bactériens présents dans une écloserie industrielle saine mais bien évidemment dans un lieu et à une époque précise.

This study aimed to analyse the quality of the sea water flowing into the marine farm of Douhet, a gilthead bream hatchery, from the marsh-seawater reservoir to the entrance of the hatchery. The basin-seawater reservoir is not stratified in the pumping area. As a consequence, the measurements carried out at the surface to the right of the pumping dock give a good evaluation of the quality of the seawater pumped in depth. The high sensitivity of gilthead bream larvae to the water PH during the first two weeks of their larval life, and the values measured in the circuit seem to be an explanatory parameter to the observed mortalities. Dix ans de production en ecloserie de mollusques bivalves ArchiMer

SATMAR has developed techniques and methods allowing a production of over 100 million spat per year at a size from 2 to 10 millimetres. Among the 13 species concerned by this production, 3 of major importance are the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Ostrea edulis and the Japanese little neck clam, Ruditapes philippinarum . The hatchery production could easily be doubled if the market would increase. Current research tend to increase the quality of the products by means of genetics and to lower the costs by improving the nursery phase.
